The mirror of lacquer. Japan. One of the most sought-after sights during this season in Japan is definitely the one you can enjoy inside the Rurikoin: in this private temple there’s a room opened on two sides to the garden. The special feature of this room is a polished lacquered table that reflects the amazing palette of colors of the Momiji trees in late autumn.
If you are going to visit Kyoto, this is a must see location. Unfortunately the stiff admission ticket is not a deterrent for the hundreds of tourists who want to enjoy this place everyday, so you have to be a bit lucky and hope not to visit the Rurikoin packed in a crowd…

Oiran

Oiran.

During an historical reenactment held in Kyoto, many traditional figures, wearing faithful reproductions of original dresses, paraded before the public. This is a photo of an Oiran, that is a courtesan of the Edo Period; specifically, the role of the Oiran was a mix of entertainer and prostitute: they were classy women and talented in singing, dancing, playing instruments like the shamisen and they were always dressed with luxurious garments. Being “high class entertainers”, they were very expensive to hire, to the point that only the aristocrats and the wealthiest people could afford their company.

The Daruma family

The Daruma family.

The Daruma family. Japan. In a big temple near Osaka, a sort of tabernacle shrine packed with Daruma shows how devoted are the people to these symbols of good luck and hope. Usually, a person who has a wish buys a Daruma doll, which has both eyes blank, and paints in black just one of them. If the wish comes true, the believer paints the other eye and brings the doll back to the temple.

Last snow on the Kinkakuji.

Last snow on the Kinkakuji. After a light snowfall in Kyoto, some white spots still adorn the dark roofs of the Kinkakuji golden pavilion and its surrounding garden. The lightly rippled surface of the pond reflects the shiny color of this unique monument.

Kinkakuji golden vision. A view of the Kinkakuji golden pavilion during a heavy snowfall. The entire garden is covered in snow, becoming almost monochromatic: this makes the shiny color of the pavilion stand out even more, turning the Kinkakuji into a golden vision.

Sacred elements – The waterfall of Minoh.

Sacred elements. A view of the waterfall of Minoh, inside the Meiji-no-mori park, in early autumn. The Momiji tree that grows close to the wall of rock, whose harsh surface is polished by the flow of water, stretches toward the waterfall, as if it would breathe the air full of droplets.
Using a 6 stops ND filter, which extended the exposure time, I managed to emphasize the shape and the jumps of the waterfall, as well as smoothing out the surface of the pond.

Minoh Taki vertorama – Waterfall in the heart of the forest

Minoh Taki waterfall vertorama.

Minoh Taki vertorama. At the end of the gorge that runs between the mountains of Meiji-no-mori natural park, this 33m tall waterfall makes for an enchanting view. The luxuriant forest embraces this pond, hiding it from the outside.
To compose this vertical panorama I’ve taken 9 landscape-oriented shots, obtaining as a result a final image whith an unusual aspect ratio, similar to a scroll, with a resolution of about 98 MPixels. Moreover, every shot is a long exposure, thanks to the use of a 6 stops ND filter.

Threshold of Earth – The sun rises through the Torii

Threshold of Earth.

Threshold of Earth. A part of the study of the connection between the Torii and the natural elements which surround it. The Torii is an iconic japanese structure belonging to Shinto shrines, in other words it’s a gate that represents the passage from the secular world to a sacred one. In this photograph I’ve aligned the rising sun and the Torii with the intent of representing this one as a threshold of a passage that connects our world with the sun, one of the most sacred natural elements, that gives life to our planet and venerated by human being since the dawn of history.
This photograph required some of planning. I wanted to align the rising sun with the Torii, positioning the latter at the same time at an angle of 45 degrees. As a result, the two opposite pillars of the gate would have pointed directly the sun. In order to obtain this “construction”, I made use of a useful smartphone’s app which keeps track of the ephemeris and the relative position of the stars in relation to the photographer’s point of shooting. The app has simplified this planning significantly, reducing at the same time the chance of failure. After that, the shoot and the subsequent post processing have been fairly straighforward: essentially, it’s a simple silhouette which required some adjustments in contrast and color, plus a crop to my taste to modify the aspect ratio of the image, making it appear wider.

The illusion of time. Another part of the study of the connection between the Torii and the natural elements which surround it. The Torii is an iconic japanese structure belonging to Shinto shrines, it’s a gate that represents the passage from the secular world to a sacred one. In this photograph I’ve took advantage of the soft light of a cloudy day and, by capturing the scene after the sunset using a long exposure, I tried to convey a sense of stillness: the boundaries between the water and the sky almost disappear, leaving the Torii and the distant mountains in an undefined space, untied from the flow of time.

Gate to eternity.

Gate to eternity. Another part of the study of the connection between the Torii and the natural elements which surround it. The Torii is an iconic japanese structure belonging to Shinto shrines, it’s a gate that represents the passage from the secular world to a sacred one. In this photograph I’ve composed a scene in which the Torii can symbolize the doorway to the light, source of life and joy diffused on our world by the sun.
