The jade cove

The jade cove. Seascape of a rocky cove in Sardinia, Italy.

The jade cove, south western Sardinia, Italy. The bright light of the afternoon reveals the colors of a rocky cove, from the lush green of some small bushes, to the tones of jade and turquoise of a crystal clear sea.
To represent the movement of the clouds pushed gently by the wind, I’ve used a 10 stops ND filter, while to empasize the clearness of the water close to the rocks I’ve used a circular polarizer. The strong light coming from beyond the promontory has required the use of a graduated ND filter, so that the brightness of the upper part of the frame could be managed by the camera sensor, falling into its dynamic range capability.

Drizzly sunrise

Drizzly sunrise. Seascape of a rocky shoreline in Sardinia, Italy.

Drizzly sunrise, north western Sardinia, Italy. A windy morning, dominated by grey and heavy clouds, turned the idyllic sardinian sea into a cold and plumbeous vision. This is obviously not a negative thing, at least speaking of landscape photography; on the contrary, the bad weather turns out to be the ideal condition because there’s a more fascinating connection between the natural elements. I’ve used a 10 stops ND filter to make the movement of the clouds stronger and smooth the water; in addition to it, a graduated ND filter allowed to balance the light in the scene by darkening the sky a bit.

Old man canine – Seascape of Sardinia

Old man canine. Seascape of a rocky shoreline in Sardinia, Italy.

South western Sardinia, Italy. In a narrow cove, a rock rises above the other, with a singular shape which reminds the one of an old man canine, eroded in this case by the water and the wind. I’ve used a 10 stops ND filter and a graduated ND filter, to smooth the water and balance the light in the scene.

Blunted teeth – Seascape of Sardinia

Blunted teeth. Seascape of a rocky shoreline in Sardinia, Italy.

A narrow cove made of round shaped rocks which reminds of some blunted teeth, eroded by the movement of the water. To emphasize what in my imagination was the shape of a jaw, I placed the camera close to the ground and in the middle of the cove’s width, so that the shapes of the rocks resulted more apparent, against the sky. I’ve also used a 10 stops ND filter and a graduated ND filter, to smooth the water and balance the light in the scene.

The punic pool – Reflections on an ancient punic quarry at sunset

The punic pool. Sunset over the south western coast of Sardinia, Italy.

Sunset over the south western coast of Sardinia. Where once was a quarry of the Punic age, now the perfectly still water reflects the sky and the colors of the sunset.

Corsair’s mirror. Sunset over the western coast of Sardinia. In this photograph I’ve played with the opposites: the emptiness of the sky with the richness of the foreground; the intersection between the harshness of the rocks and the clean stillness of the water of the puddle within.

The land of light and wind – Sunset over the island of Pan di zucchero

The land of light and wind. Island of Pan di zucchero, Western Sardinia, Italy.

The land of light and wind. Sunset over the island of Pan di zucchero, in the western coast of Sardinia. The extremely windy day allowed me to take full advantage of the long exposure: the setting sun painted the clouds with a warm light along their entire way, while the soft and ethereal form of the sea accentuated the rough spiky shapes of the rocks.

Before the storm – A seascape of South Sardinia Italy

Complementarity

Complementarity: A seascape of Capo Pecora in Sardinia during twilight. Italy.

The twilight on Capo Pecora, Sardinia, changed the landscape amazingly: the golden halo of sunlight decreased and the sky darkened, becoming deep blue. In that moment the lower sides of the clouds turned purple, painting a mesmerizing canvas above the sea; part of those vibrant hues mirrored on the almost still water of the cove. I was in an estathic wonder, practically hypnotized by such an amazing sight; nonetheless I seized the opportunity to capture it to the best of my ability.
