Immutability

Immutability: A seascape of Sardinia.

Immutability. North western Sardinia, Italy. The incessant flow of the waves between the windswept cliffs and islets tells a story of immutability and balance between water, earth and air.
To make this photo, I’ve used a tele lens, whose focal lenght helped to compress the planes of depth, and two filters: a 10 stops ND filter to extend the exposure time, turning the waves into a impalpable mist, and a 2 stops graduated ND filter to darken the sky a bit, balancing the brightness of the scene. The strong wind did the rest…

Amphitheatre waterfalls

Amphitheatre waterfalls: hidden gems of great beauty in sardinian back country.

Amphitheatre waterfalls. Sardinia is a region mostly renowned for its beaches and summer vacations destinations, being a mediterranean island; however, hidden in the back country there are so many amazing places that make Sardinia a real “treasure island”. One of the natural gems that I have had the pleasure to explore are the Lequarci waterfalls: as for many other waterfalls of the island, it’s possible to enjoy their beauty only after a rainy period, because they are fed by a torrential river. Therefore, during summer or a dry month, there are no waterfalls at all… Luckily, even if winter 2019/2020 has been quite dry, after a steep but not overly demanding trekking, I’ve reached the top of the plateau and I’ve found a sufficient flow to show the beauty and magnificence of Lequarci. The waterfall, branched in two main courses, takes a jump of 50 meters from a massive ridge of rock, to fall on a stony bed in the middle of a wood. The ridge’s shape, which resembles an amphitheatre, make the view on the valley even more scenic.
To capture this view I’ve used a 9 stops ND filters, which extended the exposure time, emphasizing in this way the water’s flow, and a 2 stops graduated ND filter to darken the sky a bit, avoiding to overexpose the brightest parts. Considering that the weather conditions and the light were about optimal, the photo editing that followed has been quite straightforward, requiring just some color and contrast adjustments made with the luminosity masking technique.

Old man canine – Seascape of Sardinia

Old man canine. Seascape of a rocky shoreline in Sardinia, Italy.

South western Sardinia, Italy. In a narrow cove, a rock rises above the other, with a singular shape which reminds the one of an old man canine, eroded in this case by the water and the wind. I’ve used a 10 stops ND filter and a graduated ND filter, to smooth the water and balance the light in the scene.

Blunted teeth – Seascape of Sardinia

Blunted teeth. Seascape of a rocky shoreline in Sardinia, Italy.

A narrow cove made of round shaped rocks which reminds of some blunted teeth, eroded by the movement of the water. To emphasize what in my imagination was the shape of a jaw, I placed the camera close to the ground and in the middle of the cove’s width, so that the shapes of the rocks resulted more apparent, against the sky. I’ve also used a 10 stops ND filter and a graduated ND filter, to smooth the water and balance the light in the scene.

Illusion of time – Long exposure of a Japanese Torii at dusk

The illusion of time.

The illusion of time. Another part of the study of the connection between the Torii and the natural elements which surround it. The Torii is an iconic japanese structure belonging to Shinto shrines, it’s a gate that represents the passage from the secular world to a sacred one. In this photograph I’ve took advantage of the soft light of a cloudy day and, by capturing the scene after the sunset using a long exposure, I tried to convey a sense of stillness: the boundaries between the water and the sky almost disappear, leaving the Torii and the distant mountains in an undefined space, untied from the flow of time.

Gate to eternity – Japanese Torii during sunrise

The Torii is an iconic japanese structure belonging to Shinto shrines, it’s a gate that represents the passage from the secular world to a sacred one. In this photograph I’ve composed a scene in which the Torii can symbolize the doorway to the light, source of life and joy diffused on our world by the sun.

Sunrise in Venice from the Accademia bridge on Canal Grande

Sunrise in Venice from the Accademia bridge on Canal Grande.

A panorama of an iconic place in Venice: Canal Grande and the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute from the Accademia Bridge (Ponte dell’Accademia). The pale light of sunrise allowed me to give a painterly look to the frame, with a surreal sense of stillness. The absence of hard shadows, due to the soft light, and the mirror-like surface of the water amphasize the amazing details of the palaces which look onto the Canal Grande, as well as the shape of the dome of Santa Maria della Salute, on the background. This is a panorama made of 4 portrait-oriented long exposures taken with Lee ND and ND Grad filters.

Pastel sunset on Venice Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront in spring

Pastel sunset on Venice.

Pastel sunset on Venice in spring. In the picture are clearly visible the Bell Tower of San Marco, the Doge’s Palace, the domes of San Marco Basilica and the Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront. The hot, humid and partially cloudy afternoon produced a unique atmosphere, made of painterly and pastel colors and a sense of stillness obtained with the help of a long exposure.

Iconic Burano – A glimpse on the island of a thousand colors

Iconic Burano – A glimpse on the island of a thousand colors.

Iconic Burano. A view of the colorful houses of Burano, taken from the Love Viewing Bridge in a sunny day of spring. The direction of this canal points to Venice, 45 minutes away by “vaporetto”. This is quite a rare photograph: despite this spot has been photographed a billion times, a well executed long exposure made with a tripod is a different matter; this because these “fondamenta” are always overcrowded and, most critical, the tiny wooden bridge shudders under the “heavy steps” of passing people, ruining the shot.
