Jewels of the night

Jewels of the night

“Jewels of the night”. Pixinnì watchtower and Cala Segreta, southern Sardinia. The darkness of the night and the clear sky (Sardinia is the Italian region with the least light pollution, i.e. dark nights) offer two jewels: the clearly visible core of the Milky Way and the transparencies of the crystalline waters enclosed among the rocks of the cove.

This nocturnal landscape required, in addition to the usual planning, the use of two distinct techniques: to capture as much light and details of the Milky Way as possible, without having to deal with massive digital noise (due to the high ISO sensitivity) I took 18 shots of the sky, subsequently aligned and merged in post production. As for capturing the foreground (rocks, sea and tower) I’ve shot a single exposure, adding a bit of light painting withe use of a LED “magic wand” set with a suitable color temperature, thus illuminating all the details that can be seen in the photo. Using Lightroom and Photoshop, I then proceeded with the editing and the adjunstments of colors and brightness of the foreground and sky.

The jade cove

The jade cove. Seascape of a rocky cove in Sardinia, Italy.

The jade cove, south western Sardinia, Italy. The bright light of the afternoon reveals the colors of a rocky cove, from the lush green of some small bushes, to the tones of jade and turquoise of a crystal clear sea.
To represent the movement of the clouds pushed gently by the wind, I’ve used a 10 stops ND filter, while to empasize the clearness of the water close to the rocks I’ve used a circular polarizer. The strong light coming from beyond the promontory has required the use of a graduated ND filter, so that the brightness of the upper part of the frame could be managed by the camera sensor, falling into its dynamic range capability.

Complementarity

Complementarity: A seascape of Capo Pecora in Sardinia during twilight. Italy.

The twilight on Capo Pecora, Sardinia, changed the landscape amazingly: the golden halo of sunlight decreased and the sky darkened, becoming deep blue. In that moment the lower sides of the clouds turned purple, painting a mesmerizing canvas above the sea; part of those vibrant hues mirrored on the almost still water of the cove. I was in an estathic wonder, practically hypnotized by such an amazing sight; nonetheless I seized the opportunity to capture it to the best of my ability.

Ephemeral

Ephemeral: A seascape of Capo Pecora in Sardinia during the sunset. Italy.

As the sun was disappearing below the horizon, the gradient of colors in the sky became more vibrant: the intense golden light around the sun, opposed to the cold tones of magenta and blue up in the sky, produced and ephemeral and amazing vision which turned the cove of Capo Pecora and its rough-edged rocks in an otherworldly scenery.

Convergence

Convergence: A seascape of Capo Pecora in Sardinia during the sunset. Italy.

When the sun started to set on Capo Pecora, the magic of the golden hour turned the cove into a mesmerizing scenery; the last rays of light, passing through the irregularities of the rocks, made the surfaces of the wet pebbles shine, while the bright sky on the horizon emphasized the harsh silhouettes between the shore and the sun.
I captured this moment using my ultrawide lens, equipped with a graduated ND filter and the Lee Big Stopper filter, which extended the exposure and accentuated the effect of light and colors on the scene.
