Daimon-zaka the ancient pilgrimage path in the Kii peninsula

Daimon-zaka, the ancient pilgrimage path. Japan.

The Daimon-zaka is part of the Sankeimichi pilgrimage path in south-eastern area of the Kii peninsula; it is a monumental staircase made with cobblestones that climbs a slope of about 600 meters to reach the Kumano Nachi Taisha. The quiet atmosphere and the almost physical sensation of being embraced by the ancient forest establish some sort of spiritual bond with that natural place, arousing a pleasant peaceful feeling.

The realm of the ancients

The realm of the ancients

The realm of the ancients. The undergrowth of the ancient forest of Mount Amiata is covered with a mantle of brown leaves and the stones are populated by lush moss.
The thin trunks of the Beech trees stretch out to the sky, capturing as much light as they can, making the undergrowth a realm of dim light.

Road to the misty forest

Road to the misty forest

The road that leads up to Mount Amiata passes through the ancient and misty forest made of Beech and Chestnut trees. To take this shot I had my back covered by my sweet Sara, who was checking on the road. Luckily there were no other cars passing in that moment of the day and I had the opportunity to capture this view taking all the time I desired.
