Gathering of the noble elders

In the deeper part of the Costanti wine cellar, whose floor is four steps below the others, seven massive casks almost fill the narrow room. They are arranged in a way that makes me think of a gathering of noble elders: they stand one before the others, gathered together under the family’s coat of arms.
I’ve particularly liked the craftsmanship of these casks, their polished wood bordered in red and the burnished steel rings, and I bet that their content is even finer 😉

Ancient cellar

2016/01/15 Claudio Beffa Classical Italy

Crossing the wooden gate of the Costanti estate made me jump in another dimension; my senses almost felt this change. The air was cold and humid, thanks to the thick stone walls (the perfect conditions for wine aging) and the only light coming from outside passed through a small window, drawing a bright beam on the ground. The cellar was small and divided in three spaces, each of which wass packed with casks made of oak wood, whose steel rings shined under the light of the old wrought-iron chandeliers. It really seemed to be in a castle.

The entrance of an ancient wine cellar in Tuscany. Crossing the solid wooden portal, framed with creepers and topped by the family crest, a dim lighted corridor brings you in a place that makes you wonder if, in reality, you’ve just crossed a time portal instead of the gate to the cellar.

Inside the cistern

This is the ancient ampoule-shaped water cistern of the Solaria’s farmstead, a rare thing nowadays because very few still survive almost intact.
